Egg delivery and hatching of the first larvae – yay!

After the arrival of this year‘s first eggs to our hatching container on the Danube island two weeks ago a lot has changed. In the beginning, growth, movement and the yolk make the larvae look a lot like tadpoles and less like mighty sturgeons. Within 1.5 weeks the yolk, from which they feed on, will be finished and feeding of the fish starts. The first food we feed them will be brine shrimp (Artemia). The bellies of the fish will turn reddish due to the shrimps color. Their outlooks change quite quickly and soon they remind of sturgeons with their barbels and body shape. After the switch to external food the first thousand sterlets are released in the project areas, the rest will stay with us on the Danube Island for a little longer.
