After the arrival of this year‘s first eggs to our hatching container on the Danube island two weeks ago a lot has changed. In the beginning, growth, movement and the yolk make the larvae look a lot like tadpoles and less like mighty sturgeons.
In April we got interviewed for the radio show „Superscience Me“ aired on radio Orange. The episode had a focus on water and we talked in the second part about our project and the importance of Danube water in the hatching of sterlets. Link to the podcast: https://cba.fro.at/402477
This years´ board meeting of the World Sturgeon Conservation Society took place in Oggebbio. All members before elected the manager of the LIFE Sterlet Project into the board as treasurer.
During the last days we tried to catch additional sterlets in the Danube for reproduction. Luckily we caught several active spawners.
The season has started and our new team is ready to go. For the first months of hatching we get support from Svenja, Robin, Sophie, Sandra, Christopher and Christina.
New master and bachelor theses are also being developed and in the making.
This year’s BOKU delegation to Brussels focused on the sturgeons, presenting the LIFE project at the standing representation of Austria in Brussels.
50 European countries signed up to a continental-wide action plan to save this iconic fish family. The landmark commitment was adopted in Strasbourg by the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention, the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats.
